Finance hasn’t had a great reputation lately. For most of us, it’s not the first sector to leap to mind when we think of improving the lives of disadvantaged young people or offering them a second chance.

But the Private Equity Foundation (PEF) does exactly that. A leading venture philanthropy fund, it works with carefully chosen charities to help young people reach their full potential.

Focusing on young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), PEF both invests money in specific projects, and offers the pro bono expertise of the private equity community.

It works closely with partners such as the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), engages significant numbers of major financial institutions and fundraises through innovative events and campaigns.

Beyond budget

Charity is changing. PEF’s interaction with charities is a prime example of intelligent giving. By encouraging its members to offer their business skills, it maximises the benefit of its donors’ investments. This expertise helps charities to strengthen their impact and reach more people more effectively.

The brief

When PEF planned a unique conference, Collaborating for Change, in association with the DCSF and Innovation Exchange, they needed a powerful film to launch the event. The conference brought together leaders from business, charity and local government to develop new partnerships to support young people.

The creative approach

The stark, unflinching film which resulted highlights how the system can fail young people when they most need support. Featuring three intimate interviews, it demonstrates how appropriate intervention can give them a second chance to return to education, find meaningful work or train to improve their skills.

The brief

PEF needed a film to showcase their work with charities in 2008/2009 and the impact on young people’s lives. They also wanted to embed their brand in people’s minds as the private equity charity and encourage the community to donate time as well as money.

The creative approach

The result is undeniably powerful, as many viewers stated after the film's debut screening. Promoting PEF's philosophy and branding throughout – as well as detailing the work of charities funded by the foundation – this is film-making with the potential to inspire.
