Flicking on the switch…
Making a drama out of an energy crisis
How do you make the mundane amazing?
National Grid wanted a memorable and entertaining way to highlight its vital role in our daily lives.
Using the Rugby World Cup as a topical hook, it commissioned a film for staff and consumers which tracks a fan's fluctuating electricity use from his first ‘sickie’ call to work, through the morning routine – boiling the kettle, making toast – to the moment TVs across the country are turned on for the game.
The lighthearted everyday story is meshed with straight-to-camera interviews with technical staff to show how demand forecasters anticipate the peaks and troughs in demand.
Sophisticated crane and tracking shots, plus judicious lighting, helps animate the static location of the central control room in which the team works. And motion graphics are used to animate charts, bringing dry data to life.
Feedback from the film, shown to National Grid staff as part of their monthly communications briefing, and in public presentations, has been universally positive.
