Recently I attended a panel discussion on 'employee engagement strategies for the downturn and beyond', attended mostly by organisational development and HR professionals, with a smattering of chief execs and agency types like myself. The panel included two people whose specific role within their organisations was to monitor and nurture employee engagement - in interesting development in itself. The overall message from the speakers was clear: employee engagement is proving to be an effective way to ride out the recession, even if companies are having to lose staff.

'Engaging for Success: the McLeod report' is a piece of work commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Its subtitle, 'enhancing performance through employee engagement' describes how, amongst other things, UK business can pull through the recession by recognising the value of engaged employees in the workplace. To support this argument, it cites a range of research which quantifies the relationship between engagement and performance, retention, innovation, customer satisfaction, etc.
