FlipBoard: A look at the future of online magazines and user experience

When the iPad came out a lot of people focused on the various technologies they felt it lacked but the truth is iPad was never about presenting a handheld computer with massive technology capabilities. It is about creating an entirely new way of experiencing content online for a wider audience not just us techies.

While iPad provided the hardware and the conceptual idea, a new product called FlipBoard provides a real tangible next generation online experience.

FlipBoard collects official news from a range of news channels be it websites, blogs or Twitter feeds and repurposes it into a lovely magazine-like design.

It also allows you to map your social networks to the product so news, photos and links shared by your friends is embedded into the magazine format.

It treats all content on equal terms creating a highly personalised magazine just for you based on your interests and your social networks.

FlipBoard is not a website. It is not a portal of feeds. I think it is the first true translation of a magazine experience to an online format and the first steps into a new world of online user experience.

Have a look at this interview with CEO Mike McCue to get a more in-depth look at what FlipBoard does.
