Illustrating climate change’s long-term effects to inspire long-term thinking
Climate change is real and inevitable, but its effects can seem a long way off. We helped Defra focus the public’s attention on the crucial issue of how to adapt to climate change before drastic changes become necessary.
The resource pack we created – Future Worlds – was designed to show how society will adapt to cope with the inevitable changes.
Working closely with technical experts to ensure accuracy and the right blend of annotations, we produced a series of illustrations to demonstrate the adaptations most likely to prove successful in 2030’s climate, according to Defra’s most realistic estimates.
Designed to be used either as a pack or individually and featuring a suite of different scenarios – including cityscapes and seascapes – they were employed in a range of Defra communications, including presentations, posters and exhibitions.
Future Worlds attracted considerable press interest, including a double-page spread in the Independent on Sunday.
