All in the best possible taste

A new comedy campaign Comedy England was launched on Tuesday at Jongleurs, Camden Lock, with rip-roaring acts from Marcus Brigstocke, Barry Cryer and Tim Vine encouraging the English to laugh their way around the country.

Enjoy England, the domestic marketing arm of Visit Britain, retained Redhouse Lane to develop the vibrant brand, interactive website and PR material for its Comedy England promotion.

Laurence Bresh, General Manager England marketing at VisitBritain, said. “Following on from the success of England Rocks we wanted a website that provided inspiration and a fun way to interact with one of our best traits – our humour. The depth of the site offers the consumer a wealth of information about comedy past and present. The colours, logo and characters complement one of key brand values ‘fun’, and work well with main Enjoy England brand. We are all delighted with the site and initial feedback has been extremely positive.”

The site uses caricatures of the nation's favourite funny men and women to guide users around the site by themes – such as having a cackle over a pint at the pub or getting outdoors.

It shows people young and old that “it's a funny old country”. Have a look at what we've done with the gappy teeth, using the “O” and everything. Oh, please yourself.

Those who are game for a laugh can use the interactive map featuring nine zoomable regions with over 150 comedy-related locations and attractions – including Torquay, the setting for Fawlty Towers; Billericay in Essex, for Gavin and Stacey fans; and the Laurel & Hardy Museum in Ulverston.

Redhouse Lane's Head of Interactive, Eddie Finch-Hawkes, said, “Comedy's a serious business. Coming up with a brand and website to support the campaign was no laughing matter! The site is easy for all audience groups to navigate thanks to the themes, interactive map and the five Ws by which audiences can sort – who to watch, what to see, when to see it, where to go and what's on – live comedic events.”

Users can also book tickets to featured venues and join an online comedy debate. The campaign runs for six months from June 2008 to January 2009.
